Trip to Oxford, MS

This weekend, Teresa, Momma, and I made our way to Oxford, MS for our cousin Natalie's wedding. I had only been to Oxford for football games, and had never really gone anywhere in the city. As much as I hate to admit it, Oxford is a really pretty town. We walked around downtown at The Square for a bit, I got a few pictures of us each sitting with a statue of William Faulkner.

We had lots of fun at the wedding. Teresa and I were Tea Girls and were in charge of cutting the wedding cake and the dessert table. My phone died, so I only managed one bad picture of Mom and Tom Nettles boogie on the dance floor. You would thing that Natalie's college friends would be the ones on the dance floor, but no, it was the Nettles who got the party started!

Book Review

I snagged this book for $0.25 on Kindle! I had been wanted to read this book for a while and was happy to get it so cheap. This book definitely falls into the dystopian book category that I've been reading a lot of lately. I really enjoyed this book, although the ending felt a bit abrupt and rushed. It was still a good read.

Book Review!

Summary: Wintergirls is a young adult novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. It follows the story of Lia, an eighteen-year-old girl dealing with anorexia nervosa. The novel opens with the news that Lia's ex-best friend Cassie, who was both anorexic and bulimic, has died under mysterious circumstances. The novel follows the course of Lia's grief and further struggles with anorexia, her difficult relations with her parents and stepmother, and her search to learn about Cassie's fate.

Today I finished reading Wintergirls. It was a book on the World Book Night book list and I wanted to read it to see why. This book was an excellent read. It was a glimpse into the mind of someones actions seem unimaginable, having an eating disorder. It show how this disease can affect the person and everyone around them. This was my second Laurie Halse Anderson book, and although they both have sensitive material, Anderson's has a way of conveying the information perfectly in her books.

Book Review

Summary: India Opal Buloni is a 10-year-old girl who has just moved to a trailer park in the small town of Naomi, Florida, with her itinerant preacher father. While in the Winn-Dixie supermarket, she encounters a scruffy dog wreaking havoc. She claims the dog is hers to save it from going to the pound and names it Winn-Dixie. Winn-Dixie's first act of inspiration on Opal is for her to challenge her father to name ten things about her mother, who abandoned them years before. Opal also befriends the very wealthy librarian Miss Franny Block, who shares great stories about her past, including a tale about her great-grandfather, whose family members died while he fought for the South in the Civil War. Grief-stricken after his return from battle, he decided he wanted to live the remainder of his life filled with sweetness. Thus, he invented Littmus Lozenge candies that tasted like a combination of rootbeer and strawberry with a secret ingredient mixed in -- sorrow. In Because of Winn-Dixie, these candies symbolize that even though life sometimes deals people a bit of sadness, there is always so much to appreciate.

I read this book the other day. 1) Because it was on the World Book Night List and 2) it was a 1 day $0.99 book for Kindle! It was a cute little dog book, that actually had a happy ending! I would defiantly consider this a children's book but it was a fun little read for me too!

Book Review!

Summary: Speak, published in 1999, is Laurie Halse Anderson's young adult novel that tells the story of Melinda Sordino's rape, recovery, and confession. After being raped at a party, Melinda is ostracized by her peers because she will not say why she called the police. Unable to verbalize what happened, Melinda nearly stops speaking altogether expressing her voice through the art she produces for Mr. Freeman's class. This expression slowly helps Melinda acknowledge that she was raped, face her attacker, and recreate her identity.

I actually watched the movie before reading this book, something I usually don't do. This book is one of the best books I've read in a while. The style and tone was different for any book I've ever read. Although the subject matter is a little dark, I really enjoyed this book. I've acquired a copy of another of this authors books, called Wintergirls (it was one of the books offered for World Book Night). I'll let ya'll know what I think when I'm done!

The Lucky One - Movie Review

Last year me and a co-worker read The Luck One by Nicholas Sparks. And tonight we finally got to go see it!

The movie was very good! It followed the book pretty well. My only complaint was the ending. It wasn't very dramatic like the book, it was sort of rushed and then it ended. But other then that it was very good! And Zac Efron was HOT!!

Book Review

I recently acquired a free copy of The Night Bookmobile by Audrey Niffenegger, the author of The Time Traveler's Wife. This book is a graphic novel, my first to read. Although it gives the appearance of being a children's book, it was far from it. It had a mysterious beginning and a very sad ending. A good read for a lover of books!
