Book Review!

Today I read Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume. It it on the All TIME 100 Novels List, one of the list I've chosen to read 15 book from.

Description from TIME:

You could almost hear the collective generational sigh of relief in 1970 when Blume published this groundbreaking, taboo-trampling young adult novel: finally, a book that talks frankly about sex without being prim or prurient, and about religion without scolding or condescending. A few months shy of her 12th birthday, Margaret Simon is starting school in a new town and asking God some serious questions. Like, when is she going to get her period? What bra should she buy? And if her mom is Jewish and her dad is Christian, is she supposed to join the Y or the Jewish Community Center? Blume turned millions of pre-teens into readers. She did it by asking the right questions—and avoiding pat, easy answers.

This was my first Judy Blume book to read and I have to safe I thoroughly enjoyed it! This was a cute little pre-teen book, I finished it just an afternoon. But it really put you back in the mind set of a little girl in a middle school girl. Now that I've finally ready one of Judy Blume's book, I defiantly want to read one of her adult books now. Any suggestions??

Afternoon Movie!

Today I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey. What a weird movie! I like sci-fi okay but this was a little over the top for me.The visual effects was really great, but for the most part I didn't enjoy the movie.

According in imbd: "2001" is a story of evolution. Sometime in the distant past, someone or something nudged evolution by placing a monolith on Earth (presumably elsewhere throughout the universe as well). Evolution then enabled humankind to reach the moon's surface, where yet another monolith is found, one that signals the monolith placers that humankind has evolved that far. Now a race begins between computers (HAL) and human (Bowman) to reach the monolith placers. The winner will achieve the next step in evolution, whatever that may be.

Movie Night!

Tonight I watched Vertigo, an Alfred Hitchcock classic starring Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak. It's about a recently retired detective who is suffering from acrophobia. He is asked by an old friend to follow his wife who has been acting strangely, the husband fears his wife is going insane, because she is possessed by a dead ancestor. As the detective investigates the strange activities of the wife, he becomes dangerously obsessed with her.

I thought this was a great movie. Alfred Hitchcock movies are always fun to watch. This was one of those movies where it kept you guessing what was going to happen right up to the ending! What a shocker, it was great!

Harry Potter Midnight Premierer!!!

Teresa and I got to the theater around 11:30 p.m. Thursday night and I was surprised how crowded it wasn't. We just walked right in and found a great seats. I was also surprised that there weren't that many people dressed up. But it was still really exciting to go to the midnight premier! The movie was awesome! I thought they did a really good job with the movie for the most part, there were a few parts that I think they should have done a little different. Overall though, it was really good. And they left it off at a great spot!! I can't wait for next summer for Part 2!!!

I didn't get to bed until 3:00 a.m.!!! Work today should be interesting! I have to be there at 8:00 a.m.

Fondren Unwrapped!

Tonight was a fun and busy night! I started the night off by going to Malco and snagging Teresa and I tickets to the midnight showing of Harry Potter! This was my first midnight premier so I was super excited about it.

Before the movie I met Lacey, Meg (Lacey's MIL), and Owenne (Lacey's SIL) for Fondren Unwrapped!!!

We had so much fun! Lots of good music, free food and free wine. And lots of walking around looking. I got several Christmas ideas, which I was excited about. Still need to do a little looking around though.

After Unwrapped, I headed home and waited for Teresa to get off work so we could head to Malco...

Movie Night!

Tonight I watched The Graduate. Starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. I've seen this movie before, but it's been a while. This movie is good, a bit strange, but good. And has lots of Simon and Garfunkel playing throughout the movie.

The movie is about a college graduate whom end up having an affair with an older, married women Mrs. Robinson. She happens to be the wife of his father's business partner. Later he finds himself falling in love with Mrs. Robinson daughter, Elaine.

Gramma's Recipe Box

= FINISHED!

Tonight I finally finished typing up all the recipes in my Gramma's recipe box. Yay! I just need to go back through them and make sure I got everything down correctly.

Now what to do? I've found several publishing websites that I'm trying to make a decision about. Lulu.com, blurb.com, and tastebook.com. I'm leaning more towards lulu.com or blurb.com. I was thinking about having it ready for Christmas.

Or, my other thought was to go ahead and e-mail my family the recipes, in hopes that people will cook them and take pictures, picture that could be included in an actual cookbook, for next Christmas. (and several of the recipes are incomplete, hopefully people can fill in the blanks.) Thoughts??

Another plus! I've now completed 1 item on my 30 before 30 list!! Woo Hoo!

Night at the Planetarium!

Tonight Teresa and I went to the Russell C. Davis Planetarium to see The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest! I hadn't been to the planetarium since I was in elementary school. We were both really excited that they were showing the movie because it's going to be a while before it is released in the US.

I thought the movie was very good. It was a great ending to the trilogy. They stuck to the book pretty good too. It should be interesting to see how the American versions stand up to the Swedish version. It's going to be a while though, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is not scheduled to come out until Dec. 2011.

Movie Night!

Tonight I watched Sophia's Choice, starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, and Peter MacNicol. The movie is about a women, Sophie who is the survivor of Nazi concentration camp. The movie flips back and forth between the "present" 1947 and back in time when Sophie was at Auschwitz. Each flash back, gives you more details about Sophia's past. Finally at the end, finding out what Sophie's choice was.

I have to say, this is one of the most depressing movies I've ever seen. That's really all I can say about this movie, it was just sad and depressing.

Movie Night!

Tonight I watched Some Like It Hot. Starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. I had seen a few clips of movie, but had never seen it all the way through.

This movie is about two male musicians who witness a mob hit in Chicago.  In an attempt to get away from the mob, they disguised themselves as women and join an all female band playing at a resort in Florida.

I thought it was a funny movie, anytime guys dress up as girls it's going to be comical. (i.e. Tooties and Mrs. Doubtfire). I've only seen a few Marilyn Monroe movie, so I was fun to see one of her more famous ones.

This movie features several numbers by Marilyn Monroe, the more recognizable song being "I Want to Be Loved By You". For your enjoying, here it is.

Book Review

Today I finally finished reading Atonement by Ian McEwan.  It it on the All TIME 100 Novels List, one of the list I've chosen to read 15 book from.

Description from TIME:

"A magnificent deception. Briony Tallis, the intricate English girl at the center of Atonement, is a budding writer. At the age of 13 she believes that through her powers of invention and language, "an unruly world could be made just so." In a complicated way, she turns out to be right, but only after she turns out to be catastrophically wrong. In the first half of the book, she passionately misunderstands a series of events she witnesses on a summer day in 1935, which leads her to formulate a lie that ruins the lives of her older sister Cecilia and Cecilia's lover Robbie. So much for the virtues of the imagination. But McEwan is crafty. Even as he shows us the deadly force of storytelling, he demonstrates its beguilements on every page. Then he leads us to a surprise ending in which the power of fiction, which has been used to undo lives, is used again to make heartbroken amends."

One of my favorite things to do is read book that are being made into movie. Reading the book first and then heading to the theater to see how it comes to life on the big screen. With Atonement, I actually saw the movie several years ago and am just now getting around to reading the book. I had a copy from a book sale a while back and was excited about finally getting to read it.

I have to admit, I was bored with majority of the book. It felt like I was swimming in unnecessary works and descriptions. But towards the end it pick up and got better. It was very sad and depressing, but the ending made it worth reading, it was still a hard book to get though.

Gideon

Tonight our sweet little family dog Gideon passed away. He had just turned 13 years old last month. He was  a good little dog and will be missed. I managed to find a few picture to share.

Movie Afternoon!

This afternoon I watched The Wizard of Oz. I've seen this movie many times, but it was my early Friday, on my list, and I  had the time to watch it, so I did.  It was fun to watch it again, even if it did cause me to have Somewhere Over the Rainbow stuck in my head for the rest of the night. And now, thanks to me, it may be stuck in yours. :)

Hello Mr. Sun!

Movie Night!

Tonight I watched Nashville. This movie follows about 20 different characters, somehow all interacting together at one point or another. The main story line surrounding music in Nashville and a political campaign. All events leading up to a dramatic ending.

I'm guessing this movie was much more meaningful for the people when this movie came out, with the recent assassination of President Kennedy and the Vietnam War, but I wasn't impressed. I thought it was a waste of 2 hrs and 40 minutes. There were too many story lines and I really didn't understand the message the movie was trying to convey. I would not recommend this movie.
