World Book Night 2012

Today I participated in World Book Night! World Book Night is a celebration of reading and books which sees tens of thousands of passionate volunteers gift books in their communities to share their love of reading.

As part of the application, there were 30 books to chose from. I got 20 copies of my second pick, Jodi Picoult's My Sister Keeper. I chose to give them away at work and the gym. It was lots of fun to see people's faces when they were given a free book! And it's fun knowing I was part of giving away 1 million books to encourage people to read!

Youth Villages 5k

Picture taken by Candice!

This weekend Can and I ran the Youth Village 30th annual 5k. Since we were part of the first 300 to sign up, we got a special shirt. It was a very chilly day, but once we got moving, it turned out to be a good thing! At the end we were greeted with hot dogs, beer, and ice cream! We had so much fun and I can't wait for our next race!

Page from 1940 Census

Something I thought I would share. This week Momma, Teresa, and I had dinner with our cousin Jo Ellen. In conversation, I asked her if she had looked at the 1940 Census, she said she had and that her daughter Emily had found this. For the family, do you see what I see?

Cirque Du Soleil!

To end our trip to Las Vegas, we decided to go see the Cirque Du Soleil show Love. It was in our hotel. This was the best show I have ever seen! It was visually magnificent and the music was great too. Who doesn't love The Beatles. It was a great ending to our trip to Vegas!

Fancy Dinner at the Mirage

For our last night in Vegas, we went all out. We when to dinner at a steak restaurant in our hotel called Stack. I got their 9oz Petite Filet with some delicious butter topping, they also had two house sauces to try with it. Both were delicious! For a side I got their Adult Tater Tots. Tater tots filled with bacon and Brie cheese! I also got a Dogfish Head 90 minute Imperial IPA beer. It was more of a sipping beer then a chugging beer, but it was tasty! Dessert we shared. The Warm Chocolate Cake. It was liquid molten center, with chocolate fudge sauce and vanilla ice cream.

Lunch at the Venetian

Today we went to the Venetian to eat at Postrio, Wolfgang Puck's restaurant. I had a pizza with Prosciutto, Kalamata Olives, Oven Dried Tomatoes, Basil Pesto, and Goat Cheese. It was a little on the salty side but very delicious! We even got a little show while we were eating. Jesters on stilts juggling and a lady singing opera.

Lunch on the Strip

This week I got to go on a business trip to Las Vegas. The symposium was very good, and we had lots of fun! I got to go with two co-workers whom I actually work with at ESF (my former job). When we first got to Las Vegas we had some time to kill before we went to the meet and greet. My friend Lacy talked to a guy on the plane who recommended Mon Ami Gabi at The Paris hotel. I got the Warm Chicken and Brie Sandwich (and green apple) and hand-cut frites. This meal was delicious and it was such a pretty day to sit outside and people watch!

Book Review

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs.
It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Today I finished Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. This book had been on my list of books to read and I sagged it when it when on sale on my Kindle. This was a fun story told through amazing vintage photos and hand written letters. Although, some of them were hard to read and see using the Kindle. It was still a very enjoyable book. This book left me wanting more to the story, I have read the squeal will be out sometime in the Spring on 2013!
