Movie Night!

Tonight I watched The Searchers starring John Wayne. 

Summary: Ethan Edwards, returned from the Civil War to the Texas ranch of his brother, hopes to find a home with his family and to be near the woman he obviously but secretly loves. But a Comanche raid destroys these plans, and Ethan sets out, along with his 1/8 Indian nephew Martin, on a years-long journey to find the niece kidnapped by the Indians under Chief Scar. But as the quest goes on, Martin begins to realize that his uncle's hatred for the Indians is beginning to spill over onto his now-assimilated niece. Martin becomes uncertain whether Ethan plans to rescue Debbie...or kill her.

I haven't seen very many John Wayne movies or Westerns for that matter. But I really enjoyed this movie very much! It everything you could ask for, cowboys and Indians, loss and love. I would definitely recommend!!

Movie Review

Tonight I watched Lawrence of Arabia, starring Peter O'Toole. This movie is about: An inordinately complex man who has been labeled everything from hero, to charlatan, to sadist, Thomas Edward Lawrence blazed his way to glory in the Arabian desert, then sought anonymity as a common soldier under an assumed name. The story opens with the death of Lawrence in a motorcycle accident in Dorset at the age of 46, then flashbacks to recount his adventures: as a young intelligence officer in Cairo in 1916, he is given leave to investigate the progress of the Arab revolt against the Turks in World War I. In the desert, he organizes a guerrilla army and--for two years--leads the Arabs in harassing the Turks with desert raids, train-wrecking and camel attacks. Eventually, he leads his army northward and helps a British General destroy the power of the Ottoman Empire.

This movie was very good, just a little long for my taste. It was almost 4 hours long. It took me a little while to get into this movie. It was more of a man flick, but still very entertaining to watch!

New to me Coffee Table!

This weekend I got so much accomplished. I got to run lots of errands that I had been putting off. A few months ago I set up donation boxes in every room in my apartment. When there was something I saw that I wasn't using, it went in the box. This weekend I finally went through the boxes and divided them between things to consign and things to take to Gateway Thrift Store. I stopped at Repeat Street and The Orange Peel to get their rules on consignment.

I had been looking for a coffee table for a while (new or used) and while I was at The Orange Peel (getting their rules on consignment) I finally found a coffee table I like!

Book Review

Summary: This bracing second entry follows straight from Tally's stunning choice at the end of Uglies. Now mesmerizingly pretty from the high-tech surgery that everyone in this dystopian future receives at age 16, Tally and her friends have no obligations beyond partying. Being pretty includes being pretty-minded: "empty and lazy and vapid," pleasure-focused, with everything seeming "vague and fuzzy." A group of rebels outside the city may have a cure; Tally had volunteered (pre-surgery) to be the test case, but will her newly pretty brain agree with her old self? She and her boyfriend engineer a hot-air balloon escape, during which Tally gets separated from him and ends up in the woods, discovering ancient-type people kept alive in an alarming experiment. When she finally reaches the rebels, things go instantly wrong in a continuation of this series' powerful theme of manipulation and betrayal. Exciting plot with intriguing technology—part three is eagerly awaited.

This book was so good! It was even better then the first, and left with an even bigger cliff hanger. I can't wait to start reading the next two books! If you like book series and are a girl, I would defiantly recommend these books!

1 Dozen Krispy Kreme Donuts

I'm not sure what made me add this to my 30 before 30 list, but I did. And it was an epic fail. I only made it to 6. But don't worry. The uneaten ones didn't go to waste. Momma and Teresa came over to eat leftover (from the large meal we had yesterday) and they made of a great dessert! I even have a couple left for breakfast at work on Monday!

 

 

5 COURSE MEAL!

One of the items on my 30 before 30 list is to make a 5 course meal. So in search of something to do for Momma's birthday, Teresa and I decided it would be fun to make the meal for her. Thanks to Pinterest, I came up with a great menu. This was a huge undertaking, but I had lots of fun making it.

Brown Sugar and Balsamic Glazed Pork Loin

Roasted Parmesan Green Beans

Roasted Baby Potatoes with Soy, Butter, and Parsley

Raspberry Sorbet and Champagne

Brownies

Here are the recipes I used: 

Tortellini Soup 


Ingredients:
1 15 oz can vegetable broth
1 tablespoon minced onion
1 minced garlic clove
Pinch red pepper flakes
1-1/2 cup uncooked tortellini
5-6 basil leaves


Directions:
In a small pot, saute the onion, garlic and red pepper flakes for about 2 minutes, or until the onion is softened and translucent. Add in the vegetable broth and once it has come to a boil add in the tortellini.


Cook tortellini according to package directions, adding the basil leaves about 30 seconds before fully cooked. Transfer to bowls and serve.




Brown Sugar and Balsamic Glazed Pork Loin

Ingredients: 
1 (2 pound) boneless pork tenderloin (or regular pork loin) 
1 teaspoon ground sage 
1/2 teaspoon salt 
1/4 teaspoon pepper 
1 clove garlic, crushed 
1/2 cup water 


Glaze 
1/2 cup brown sugar 
1 tablespoon cornstarch 
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 
1/2 cup water 
2 tablespoons soy sauce

Directions:

Combine sage, salt, pepper and garlic. Rub over roast. Place in slow cooker with 1/2 cup water. Cook on low for 6-8 hours. About 1 hour before roast is done, combine ingredients for glaze in small sauce pan. Heat and stir until mixture thickens. Brush roast with glaze 2 or 3 times during the last hour of cooking. Serve with remaining glaze on the side.

Roasted Parmesan Green Beans

Ingredients: 
12 oz green beans, trimmed (make sure they are dry)  
2 tsp olive oil  
kosher salt + fresh cracked pepper to taste  
1/4 tsp garlic powder  
1 1/2 tbsp shredded parmesan

Directions:  
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum for easy clean-up.
Lay green beans out on the baking sheet and drizzle oil over them. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder and toss to evenly coat. 


Spread them out on the sheet so that they all lay flat and place on the lower third section of your oven. Bake 10 minutes, shake the pan to turn; bake 5 additional minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with grated cheese.

Roasted Baby Potatoes with Soy, Butter, and Parsley

Ingredients:
10-15 Dutch baby potatoes  
2-3 tbsp soy sauce  
2 tsp butter  
2 tsp olive oil  
Fresh cracked black pepper  
2-3 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (divided)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Boil a large pot of water and boil the potatoes for 4-5 minutes. Remove from water and let cool. Once cooled, slice in half and combine soy sauce, butter, olive oil, black pepper and 1/2 of the parsley. Mix thoroughly and place in a baking dish that has been sprayed with olive oil cooking spray. Place in oven and roast for 20-25 minutes. Remove from oven and taste, re season with sea salt and cracked pepper if needed. Enjoy.

Movie Review

Summary:

McMurphy has a criminal past and has once again gotten himself into trouble with the law. To escape labor duties in prison, McMurphy pleads insanity and is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. Once here, McMurphy both endures and stands witness to the abuse and degradation of the oppressive Nurse Ratched, who gains superiority and power through the flaws of the other inmates. McMurphy and the other inmates band together to make a rebellious stance against the atrocious Nurse.

Today Momma. Teresa, and I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I've wanted to see this movie (and read the book) so today I finally got to see it. Jack Nicholson did a great job with this role, I thought it was very good. But had a very sad ending. I think I might try and read the book now. It's not very often I see the movie then read the book, but we'll see how it goes.

Movie Review!

Summary: (spoiler alert) 

Charmingly simple story of The Little Tramp who meets a lovely blind girl selling flowers on the sidewalk who mistakes him for a wealthy duke. When he learns that an operation may restore her sight, he sets off to earn the money she needs to have the surgery. In a series of comedy adventures that only Chaplin could pull off, he eventually succeeds, even though his efforts land him in jail. While he is there, the girl has the operation and afterwards yearns to meet her benefactor. The tear-inducing closing scene, in which she discovers that he is not a wealthy duke but only The Little Tramp, is one of the highest moments in movies.

 This was by far the best Charlie Chaplin movie I've seen. It was funny and so sweet. If you in the mood or wanting to a silent movie, this would be at the top of my list!

Tom Hanks is so funny!

Movie Night!

Tonight I watched Midnight Cowboy starring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. 

Summary: Texas greenhorn Joe Buck arrives in New York for the first time. Preening himself as a real 'hustler', he finds that he is the one getting 'hustled' until he teams up with a down-and-out but resilient outcast named Ratso Rizzo. The initial 'country cousin meets city cousin' relationship deepens. In their efforts to bilk a hostile world rebuffing them at every turn, this unlikely pair progress from partners in shady business to comrades. Each has found his first real friend.

This movie was so a bit strange and so sad. One of the things I didn't care for in the movie were the clippets of scenes. You really had to pay attention so you can piece together the Joe Buck character's past. Fun facts about this movie. Back when this movie came out in 1969 it was rated X (later changed to rated R). That being said, it's the only rated X movie to win a Oscar. 

Movie Night!

Tonight I watched Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, and Vera Miles. 

Summary: Phoenix office worker Marion Crane is fed up with the way life has treated her. She has to meet her lover Sam in lunch breaks and they cannot get married because Sam has to give most of his money away in alimony. One Friday Marion is trusted to bank $40,000 by her employer. Seeing the opportunity to take the money and start a new life, Marion leaves town and heads towards Sam's California store. Tired after the long drive and caught in a storm, she gets off the main highway and pulls into The Bates Motel. The motel is managed by a quiet young man called Norman who seems to be dominated by his mother.

This movie scares the crap out of me. I pretty much have to look away when the music swells and they are about to show something unpleasant. But like most Hitchcock movies, it's a classic!!

Book Review!

Summary:

This story is about a fox named Mr Fox. In order to feed his family, Mr Fox steals chickens, ducks, and turkeys, each night from three mean and wealthy farmers: Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. The farmers are fed up with Mr Fox's theft and try to kill him. One night, the farmers wait outside Mr Fox's foxhole in an attempt to ambush him. When Mr Fox emerges from his home, the farmers fire at him. However, the farmers only succeed in blowing off Mr Fox's tail.

Determined to catch him, the farmers use spades and shovels to dig their way into the foxes' home. However, Mr and Mrs Fox and their four children escape by digging a tunnel deeper into the ground. The farmers then use bulldozers in order to dig deeper into the ground, but to no avail.

The three men therefore decide to watch the entrance to the fox tunnel with shotguns at the ready, while the farmers' men patrol the area to make sure the foxes do not escape.

After three days of starving, Mr Fox comes up with a plan. He and his children dig a tunnel into Boggis' chicken house. There, they steal some chickens and depart without leaving any sign of their presence. They also raid Bunce's storehouse of ducks, geese and vegetables as well as Bean's underground cellar of cider.

Along the way, the foxes meet Badger and other digging animals who are also starving due to the farmers' siege of the hillside. Mr Fox, feeling responsible for the whole affair, invites the other animals to a feast made from the loot. At the feast, the animals decide to make an underground town where they will be safe, while discreetly obtaining food from the farmers.

Meanwhile, Boggis, Bunce, and Bean keep guard on the tunnel entrance in pouring rain, unaware that Mr Fox and his friends are stealing their food right under their noses. The book ends with the indication the three will be waiting forever.

I acquired a box set of Roald Dahl books during Border's going out of business sale (I had a gift card that I needed to use up). Slowly but surly I am reading my way through them. Today I started and finished this book today. This was one of Roald Dahl's book I haven't read before. There wasn't much to it, but I thought it was very a cute little book! Now to decided which book to read nev

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

For Christmas I got a copy of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close By Jonathan Safran Foer. (Thanks Teresa!!) I saw the trailer for the movie, and since I'm a fan of reading books and seeing the movie, this book when to the top of my wish list. 

Book Summary: The main narrator of the story is a nine-year-old child, Oskar Schell, an intellectually curious and sensitive child of Manhattan progressives whose father died two years earlier on 9/11. He is a pacifist, a vegan, musician (he plays the tambourine), academically-inclined, and above all, earnest. Oskar wanders New York, searching for the meaning of a strange key he finds inside a blue vase in his father's closet. Two additional narrators, Oskar's paternal grandparents, tell the story of their childhood, courtship, marriage, and separation before the birth of Oskar's father; much of their story is presented as a series of letters addressed to Oskar or his father.

Tonight I finished the book and it was one of the best books I've read in a while. It's hard to describe it, I went through so many emotions, mostly sad, but it was still an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend this book. And I can't wait to go see the movie.

Movie Night!

Summary: Spade and Archer is the name of a San Francisco detective agency. That's for Sam Spade and Miles Archer. The two men are partners, but Sam doesn't like Miles much. A knockout, who goes by the name of Miss Wanderly, walks into their office; and by that night everything's changed. Miles is dead. And so is a man named Floyd Thursby. It seems Miss Wanderly is surrounded by dangerous men. There's Joel Cairo, who uses gardenia-scented calling cards. There's Kasper Gutman, with his enormous girth and feigned civility. Her only hope of protection comes from Sam, who is suspected by the police of one or the other murder. More murders are yet to come, and it will all be because of these dangerous men -- and their lust for a statuette of a bird: the Maltese Falcon.

The Maltese Falcon stars Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor and Gladys George. Out of all the Humphrey Bogart movies I've seen, this was probably the worst. It started out good, then got really boring, but it picked up, and had a good ending.
