Movie Night!

Tonight I watched Night at the Opera starring the Marx Brothers. This movie was about a man and his two friends who are trying to get a couple hired at an opera company. However, the head of the opera house did not think the man was good enough. So the Marx Brothers arrange for the original tenor of the opera to miss the performance and the new tenor takes his place.

This was my second Marx Brothers movies to watch. Although it was full of slap slick comedy, a actually enjoyed this movie more then the first Marx Brothers movie I watched. It had a much better story line and seemed to move along better. Not sure if I will ever watch another Marx Brothers movie, but if you ever have the desire to watch one of their movies, this would be the one to watch.

Here is most comical scene from the movie, it extremely silly. Here it is:

New Restaurant!

Tonight I finally got to try Babalu in Fondren. It's this cute little Taco and Tapas restaurant. It's been open for a few months and I was finally able to try it tonight!

Babalu!!!!

Calamari and this fantastic sauce!

Red Sangria!

So my thoughts about this restaurant is that it was very good. However, you don't get much for what you are paying. I knew what I was getting into before I went. It's basically little tacos and appetizers. And expensive drinks. I think this would have been better as a date, where you could get a couple of things to share, however not so great when you with a group where everyone is separate.

I would give it another try though, the atmosphere was fun and also the food was not ever filling, it was very delicious!

Movie Night!

Tonight I watched the movie Network. Starring Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch, and Robert Duvall. This movie is about a television network, where they are getting rid of the oldold and bringing in the new, because of poor ratings. The movie follows this anchor, going from rock bottom, to being an icon, losing his mind, and ending with a twist.

I thought this movie was slightly boring, but still an okay movie. I've posted this famous scene from the movie. It's a scene I've seen before, but never knew what movie it as for until tonight. Enjoy!

Movie Review!

Tonight I watched Bring Up Baby, starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. This was a screwball comedy, to say the least. It's about a professor (Cary Grant) of a museum, whom is putting together a brontosaurus, and is hoping to receive a large donation for a rich heiress for the museum.  Meanwhile, he ends up meeting the heiress niece (Katharine Hepburn), despite the professor being engaged and getting married the next day, the niece knows the moment she sees him that it's the man she thinks she will marry. Through out the movie there is a chase between trying to impress the heiress for the donation, trying to find the missing piece of the brontosaurus, that a dog has hidden, and taking care of a leopard named Baby.

I've seen parts of this movie before, but had never seen it all the way through. I thought that although it was a very silly movie, it was still very cute. But just about any movie with Cary Grant or Katharine Hepburn is sure to be great!!

Book Review!

Tonight I finished The Story of Tracy Beaker by Jaequeline Wilson. This book is on the BBC Top 100 Novels and is also the first book for me to read on my new Kindle! Here is a quick summary:

The book is the "autobiography" of Tracy Beaker, a ten-year old tomboy. Tracy is living in a childrens residential care home (nicknamed "the dumping ground") where she has been placed as a result of adult neglect. She is unhappy because she hasn't seen her mum for a long time, she doesn't get on well with the staff or the other children at the care home, (especially a girl called Justine Littlewood) and has been rejected by two couples who tried fostering her. From an adult's point of view, Tracy has "behavioural problems" and she is always telling tales. A recurring story that Tracy likes to tell is that her mother is a glamorous Hollywood movie star, and that she is coming to collect her someday. Among other things, Tracy's autobiography details her life so far, her being "deprived and abused" in the children's home (for example, she is deprived of Mars Bars and Smarties) and the types of revenge she would like to take upon her enemies. She is very imaginative and believes that her mum will come home one day. She often portrays a deep and complicated mind.

I thougth this book was very cute and interesting. I had never even heard of this author until I decided on this book, and I chose it mostly because it was only $5 to send it to my Kindle. ((Another little note, I am loving my Kindle!!)) This book as in the form of a diary, that the main character, Tracy Beaker's social worker got her to start writing in. It was kind of fun being in the narrator's thoughts throughout the whole book. The only thing about this book is that it totally leaves you hanging, sort of knowing how it's going to turn out for Tracy, and sort of still wondering what really happened in the end. So now I want to read the rest of the books in this trilogy!

Movie Night!

The Last Picture Show, starring Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, Ben Johnson, Cloris Leachman, Ellen Burstyn, and Eileen Brennan.

Summary: In tiny Anarene, Texas, in the lull between World War Two and the Korean Conflict, Sonny and Duane are best friends. Enduring that awkward period of life between boyhood and manhood, the two pass their time the best way they know how -- with the movie house, basketball, and girls. Jacey is Duane's steady, wanted by every boy in school, and she knows it. Her daddy is rich and her mom is good looking and loose. It's the general consensus that whoever wins Jacey's heart will be set for life. But Anarene is dying a quiet death as folks head for the big cities to make their livings and raise their kids. The boys are torn between a future somewhere out there beyond the borders of town or making do with their inheritance of a run-down pool hall and a decrepit movie house -- the legacy of their friend and mentor, Sam the Lion. As high school graduation approaches, they learn some difficult lessons about love...

I thought this was a great movie. Kind of sad, and very real of a small town. It was fun to see an older movie with lots of actors I recognize, like Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, and Cloris Leachman. This was the movie that earned Jeff Bridges his first Oscar Nomination. And this was Cybill Shepherd's very first movie, she was just a model before she was in this movie. This movie was also based on a book, by the same title, by Larry McMurtry, the same author that wrote Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearment, and The Evening Star. The movie was a little slow at times, but still a must watch!!

New Restaurant!

For lunch today, John and I happened upon a pizza by the slice restaurant called Russo's New York Pizzeria. This was the largest piece of pizza I have ever eaten, or attempted to eat. I decided to build my own slice. That way I could get my slice with lots of olives! It was delicious!

Book Review!

Tonight I finished reading Never Let Me Go by Kazui Ishiguro. This is on the TIME Magazine 100 Best Novels List. I mainly chose this book because I know that this book was recently made into a movie, and those are some of my favorite books to read. I love reading a book, and then seeing the movie, how someone brought someone else words to life!

Anyway, this was one of the most interesting books I've ever read. I would consider it a Science Fiction book, but not in a usual way. There weren't aliens or monsters or anything, but more in a science gone too far in reality. In that this would never happen in real life, but could. I won't give away the ending but it was a very sad book, where it doesn't tell you the ending but you know what happens.

Here is the book summary from TIME:

Kathy, Tommy and Ruth are students at Hailsham, a very exclusive, very strange English private school. They are treated well in every respect, but as they grow older they come to realize that there is a secret that haunts their lives: Their teachers regard them with fear and pity, and they don't know why. Once they learn the secret it is already far, far too late for them to save themselves. Set in a darkling alternate-universe version of England, and told with dry-eyed, white-knuckled restraint, Never Let Me Go is an improbable masterpiece, a science fiction horror story written as high tragedy by a master literary stylist. It's postmodern in its conception, but Ishiguro isn't playing games or chasing trends: The human drama of Never Let Me Go, its themes of atrocity and acceptance, are timeless and, sadly, permanent.

New Restaurant!

Tonight I tried a new restaurant near the Rez with Jeff and some of his buddies. This was probably the worst restaurant I've ever been too. This place was out of Guinness! How does an Irish Pub run out of Guinness!? Then when we ordered our food, the waiter had to come back to about half of us and told us that they were out. I ended up getting the wings, which were so fatty that you couldn't tell what was fat and what was the chicken! I will not be going back here!

Movie Night!

Tonight I watched Duck Soup. Starring the Marx Brothers: Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, Chico Marx, and Zeppo Marx. This was a very short movie, only 68min long. It was about a small country and how is going bankrupt. It can only be by an old widow who will only donate her money if Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx) is elected it's president. After this happen, mayhem follows.

This was a crazy little movie. This was my first Marx Brothers movie to wathc. You could definitely tell is was made in 30's during the Great Depression. It was full of slap stick comedy, the kind that recommend me of The Three Stooges. Anyway, it was very interesting and very silly. But it was fun to watch. I found this clip from the movie, enjoy!

Movie Night!

Today I watched Jaws. Staring Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, and Robert Shaw. This movies about a great white shark that terrorises a small town. After some failed attempts by the townees. The police chief, a marine biologist, a fisherman decided to find the shark and kill it.

This is a movie I've seen many times, but just on the TV, cut up and with lots of commercials. There were actually a few scenes that actually made me jump, even though I knew how the movie was going to end! It was fun to finally see the movie all the way though.

Movie Afternoon!

The French Connection, starring Gene Hackman, is about two cops in New York City who are trying to intercept a heroin shipment from some French men who are coming to the US from.... France.

This movie started out very very slow. So slow, that the first time I tried to watch it I turned it off. About a week later I gave it another chance. This movie ended up being pretty good, once you got past the beginning part. One of things this movie is 'best know for' is the car/train chase scene. I managed to find it on youtube.com.

In reading about this chase scene, apparently it was real! On IMBD, it says that the New York City police where not notified that they were going to be filming. Some of the crashing was planned, but when one of the cars crashed into Gene Hackman, the man was on his way to work! He was compensated so his car could be fixed.

New Restaurant!

Tonight John took me out to a super nice restaurant for my birthday! We went to Perry's Steakhouse. It was the best steak I've ever eaten. They started off by bring us fresh baked bread, which was delicious! I ended up getting the Surf and Turf. It was so delicious! We ended the night with a dessert, Mont Blanc a la Frisc. It was a fancy strawberry shortcake, with fresh strawberries and ice cream. They also flambeed I white chocolate sauce right at our table! I did manage to sneak a picture of my meal...
