The Flaming Lips in Jackson
The Flaming Lips were in Jackson this morning on their journey to beat the Guinness World Record for the most live shows in a 24 hour period. The standing record to break was Jay-Z's 7 shows. So, The Flaming Lips had to do 8. They started in Memphis ending in New Orleans, having shows in Clarksdale, Oxford, Jackson, Hattiesburg, Biloxi, and Baton Rouge in between.
I really wanted to go to the Jackson show, it was right around the corner from my apartment. However, they were in Jackson around 4:00 a.m. And it turns out that they only had to play for 15 minutes for it to count towards the record. This still would have been fun but wouldn't have been the greatest idea with me having to be at work at 7:30 a.m. So here is a clip of what I missed. This is one of their popular songs that they ended each concert with.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Official Trailer
Yet another book to movie movie trailer. I read Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower about 10 years ago, and I'm excited that it's finally being made into a movie. It should also be fun to see Emma Watson in a post-Harry Potter movie. She is going to have an American English accent vs. her British English accent, should be interesting!

Book Review
In Ellen Foster, the title character is an 11-year-old orphan who refers to herself as "old Ellen," an appellation that is disturbingly apt. Ellen is an old woman in a child's body; her frail, unhappy mother dies, her abusive father alternately neglects her and makes advances on her, and she is shuttled from one uncaring relatives home to another before she finally takes matters into her own hands and finds herself a place to belong. Ellen is at the mercy of predatory adults, with only her own wit and courage--and the occasional kindness of others--to help her through. That she does, in fact, survive her childhood and even rise above it is the book's bittersweet victory.
I really enjoyed this book. The book is written through the eyes of a southern 11 year old, and the language of the book reflected this. Ellen's best friend is a poor black girl, but even though it's her friend, she still have an almost racist view of her friend. The book flip flops between Ellen's past and her present. I would recommend this book to just about anyone!

Lake Livingston, TX
This weekend John and I met some friends at Lake Livingston, TX. The guys did lots of fishing, while the ladies spent time lounging in the water. (I have the mean sunburn to prove it!) We had a great time. Here is a sunset we got to enjoy, it was amazing!

Book Review
So, I gave in and decided to read The Fifty Shades Trilogy (Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed). They have mixed reviews, but several of my co-workers were reading them so I gave in. I would describe these books as poorly written smut that I couldn't put down. I finished all 3 books in a couple of weeks. Unlike some book series I've read lately, these books actually had an ending I was happy with. Not sure who I would recommend these to, but if you like trashy novels, these may be for you!
Book Description: When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms. Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.
